Firstly credit to the Baikoen Bonsai Club YouTube channel for producing these great videos on the 2024 Pacific Bonsai Expo, thank you.
What’s the difference between watching a YouTube video and studying from one?
Well I think it comes down to your intent. It’s natural to first go ooh I like that one or maybe not so keen on that one and have a favourite or two from the exhibit. However I challenge you to go back and watch it for a second time and ask yourself some questions, trully observe and where able listen to the stories of the trees as told by the exhibitors.
Look at tree and pot pairings, what combinations really nailed it and why?
The stands did they enhance the display or take away.
Accents, did you notice them? Did they compliment the story and round out the display or did they fade into the background.
The styling of the trees, did you notice a common artist’s hand? Observing Yamadori origins versus field grown/ nursery stock. Maturity. Exhibition wiring where applicable.
As a club or organisation who holds annual bonsai shows. The set-up, back drops, spacing, vendor area, timing. What are the takeaways.
With so many golden nuggets, the only question is….Will you look for them?
Happy watching/ studying!
