Welcome to the Blog! Our personal bonsai journey’s!

I thought long and hard as to what the 1st blog should be, post website creation. Then it was clear as day; the journey! Our bonsai journey’s are so unique to us, not only from the aspect of our trees physical evolution but our personal growth, trials, experiences and enjoyment. Photographs are one way of documenting our journey, through captures we can associate what our personal thoughts were at that given time.

The 1st image is from November 2021 (a never before released image). At this stage I’m a year into my journey, I have a local nursery nearby that has some neglected native material at a bargain price, the tree is a reasonable size and has a bit of age – I’m still very green, I love native species, that’s all I need; purchased!

I don’t think anyone can say they don’t love a good nursery stock root base exploration. The excitement of what you may discover below the soil level. Well, never did I think I would uncover a root base as seen in image 2 and how this would go on to be the fundamental aspect of the design and composition as a whole.

The following images and captions give an indication of this tree’s journey from neglected nursery material to a refined composition and mirroring this, my personal journey from ground zero to a practicing bonsai professional.

Metrosideros Excelsa – Mistral, Nursery stock acquisition Nov 2021. Not much going on here.
Discovery – That root base!
Design thoughts – Now what? Interesting base, trunk line too straight and uninteresting. (Spot that leaf on the lower trunk, fast forward to 2024-that’s the entire tree.)
Autumn 2022 – Smallest pot , challenge accepted! A move to focus closer to the base, being the feature of the tree. (Reduction of the trunk)
Autumn 2023 – The application of technique that has forever changed how we can approach Metrosideros design.
The technique being applied.
Autumn 2024 – The tree responds very well and now the realisation that this composition was in need of something different in terms of a vessel.
November 2024, the journey continues. The tree anchored to a sculpted lava rock, paired with a vintage Tokoname ceramic.
