The importance of self critique.

I recently posted on social media of the 1st styling of this tree, if you haven’t yet seen it, I will include the pictures on here too.

I thought this would be a great opportunity to share a bit of my self critique process and the importance of the practice thereof.

Okay let’s get into it. The blue lines indicate 45 degree angles, I know right, how interesting is it where good design and angles intertwine. I didn’t intend on an exact 45 degree line it’s just what came of the design nor does a good design have to be 45 degrees. The critical point here is the cohesiveness of angle drop for every branch. Let’s now take a look at that red line and the yellow triangle. That last pad looks slightly out of place doesn’t it? Now this isn’t a major flaw of design nor unfixable but it highlights an area that could have been improved upon, even if just by that 1 percent. I would have preferred that pad to move slightly left at the end.

Taking photos of your trees can be a great way to self critique, it may be after an initial design or years of progression. Having a reference point to work from is key. Secondly be real with yourself, you’ll learn way faster.

Everything can be improved upon, the tree; us as individuals, it just requires us to engage with a mindset of humility and commitment to the concept of life learning.

The more we self critique, the better we can critique others.

The tree in July 2024, just recently separated from the parent tree. Life starting as an air-layer.
